In June 2004, the National Civic League named Spokane an All-America City . Spokane was recognized for it's efforts in civil excellence, government, business and technology. Spokane was last recognized as an All-America City during Expo '74. With this recognition, Spokane becomes one of only a handful of cities that have twice won the award.
What makes Spokane an All-American City? Spokane is the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis plus it is located in the center of a recreational area. Spokane County has a population of approximately 450,000. One U.S. Interstate freeway route and four U.S. highway routes serve Spokane. Spokane International Airport is used by approximately 1.6 million people a year and provides nonstop service to larger cities in the West, Midwest, and Canada. Amtrak offers rail service for the city on its route between Chicago and Seattle. The Spokane Transit Authority provides intercity bus service in all major directions from Spokane as well as convenient transit service within metro Spokane County.
Spokane weather combines the characteristics of a mild, arid climate during summer months and a cool, coastal type climate in the winter. Summer weather is ideal for full enjoyment of the many mountain and lake recreational areas in the immediate vicinity. Winter weather includes occasional snowfall of several inches. Nearby mountainous winter sports areas receive a great deal more snow and have a season of 5 to 6 months for skiing & many winter activities.
